In the 21st century, technology and social media have greatly reduced community connectedness. Before the 21st century, neighborhoods were connected, and neighbours interacted daily. Today, neighbours are isolated from each other, and community-based living is reduced, so real social interaction is replaced by social media. Stigmatizing single people is another issue which may make singles feel like outcasts.
A therapist can help clients re-frame singleness as a complete and fulfilling state, not as incompleteness. Meaningful, intimate relationships can exist without physical or romantic intimacy, and individuals waiting on God for a romantic partner may still nurture these connections. Singleness does not mean pausing one’s life until marriage; a single person can live fully and purposefully now. Singleness is not loneliness; in fact, a person can have thousands of followers, but feel lonely, but solitude can still mean connectedness.
